l have a 1996 megane coupe. Locking and unlocking the car sounds funny and once unlocked, when l try to start the engine, the immobiliser goes crazy and the alarm goes off!!! therefore l cant start the engine, and my car is currently stranded. Is there any way to disconnect the immobiliser so l can start the engine? can anyone offer any advice?

Had a similar problem with a Mondeo, every so often immobiliser would kick in for no reason, eventually had the unit removed by a garage and it was good as gold after that, still had the light on so anybody would think it was still active as well. would think you could do the same with a Renault. good luck

As far as l know it is not possible to disconnect the immobiliser. The immobiliser & alarm r de activated when u unlock the car with the 'plip' button on the key. If the electronic bit of the key goes wrong u cannot start the car. If the 'plip' receiver or ecu develop a fault u cannot start the car. The immobiliser system seems to be built into the electronics of the car. The key has to be programmed to the car in order to work & Renault charge a fortune for this (approx £140 to supply & program new key) l would recommend looking for an independent 'key programming' specialist who could help. l would ignore all the people on the net who claim it is possible to program a used key yourself - l have been down that road with my own 96 Megane coupe - l have spent hours & tried a total of four different keys (all infra red keys same as original) to no avail. Renault can provide u with a four digit code which u can put in to disarm the alarm/immobiliser as a temporary measure but this only works for a limited time according to Renault (they can not tell me how long though) & is a pain to put the code in every time u start up. Hopefully mine will be sorted this week as Renault have ordered me a new key under warranty as the old one that packed up was less than a year old (just). l am glad the previous owner of my car kept the receipt for this :-) Good Luck!!!!
