Not sure the make of car will help you with this but hey!

My car is not working today!When l stop and have to move forward in 1st gear it revs up like mad but wont go anywhere!Almost like it would if you hadnt put the car into gear properly but it is and its doing it in 1st and 2nd - its not great in 3rd or 4th but not as bad as 1st and 3rd!

Any ideas what it could be and how expensive to fix?

RENALT CLIOS IS A PILE OF JUNK. YOU SHOULD SELL IT AND BUY A FORD. THEY ARE KNOWN FOR THERE FAULTS ONEMAIN FAULT IS THE BOOT COMING UP WHEN PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AND CAUSING ACIDENTS. SELL IT.

Sounds like your clutch plates have burnt out. To repair by main dealer probaly 200 to 350. Back street garage maybe less. But remember you get what you pay for.

Sounds like the clutch to me, but hey, l am only a woman what would l know?

Another vote for the clutch. DO NOT go to the dealer...very expensive. Prices vary, but Mr Clutch was the cheapest in my area.Cost was approx £200 Make sure you go before it burns out completely and then need to pay for a tow. Good luck.

l am afraid another vote for the clutch is gone but there might be 1 more possibility l am a mechanic and this also happened. the drive shaft came about three quarter of an inch away from the gearbox and you could select all gears but was doing what you are explaining a cheaper fix but in my opinion its the clutch l could fit for you if you are local hope this helps.

The Renault Clio is a good car, l have serviced my two nieces Clio is and they have given good service and are very reliable, but like any car on the road they need to be looked after.
A clutch change is not a difficult job, so shop around but give the dealers a miss.

Its sounds to me that your clutch has worn and yes it is expensive to have another put in.
Have you got a Kwik fit near you as l think they are the most resonable when it comes to this kind of thing.

Having only owned sports cars my whole life, l am very familiar with your situation. In my experience it was the Clutch when this happened on my MGA Roadster: The gears are not engaging properly.
If l were you l would take the advice from your other and look for an affordable mechanic to check your problem out. Good luck!
