this morning l got in my car and did a short journey only to notice that my engine started steaming. l looked under the bonet and at the back on the right hand side of my engine is a rusty coloured tank with min and max levels and this is what was steaming. does anybody know what this could be and how to fix it. its a renault megane scenic rt 1.6e thanx

Sounds like you have an overheating/leak problem - a multitude of possible causes. The tank you refer to is the coolant expansion tank. Try the easiest/cheapest option first - a new expansion tank cap. Sorted it on my Vectra some years ago.Failing that, get cooling system pressure checked for leaks and then move onto overheating issues,best dealt with at garage.

The tank u describe is the exansion tank for the radiator. When the water in the radiator gets hot & expands beyond a certain pressure, it escapes through a valve in the radiator cap & into this tank. The reverse happens when the water cools & contracts. The steam may be just ur car running hot due to hard driving etc. or the car could be low on water, (water level should be halfway between min & max level with engine cold), but l am afraid it may be due to a blown head gasket. You can tell if its the head gasket if the car keeps blowing pressure out through the expansion tank, there may also be a milky white mayonnaise-like substance under the oil filler cap. If it is the head gasket it will have to be replaced by a reputable garage, & the head may have to be skimmed. It will cost several hundred euros. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Sounds as though your radiator was frozen up thus preventing the water from circulating, do you have the correct water/anti-freeze mixture?, get it checked.
