l am looking at getting a new car - l was wondering whether a Laguna would be a good idea - It is for a taxi.

we had 1 they are terrible we had loads of electrical problems and shortages in the end it went back we now have the new zafira its a dream !!

I'd have to agree with the first answer - they're a lovely car to drive, but they are prone to terrible electrical problems. If it is for a taxi, I'd seriously consider a BMW diesel - it wo not break down, and they are great on fuel. My ex wife is 2001 320d is for sale - never a problem, averages 53mpg, replaced by a brand new 318d, looks to be closer to 60mpg average around town.

The Renault Laguna has an appalling reputation for reliability (mainly electrics) and you will spend a lot of your profit on repairs.

If l were intending to get into cabbing l would buy a 115bhp TD l Volkswagen Passat Estate.

Tough, reliable and if you stay away from the 130PD cheap to repair as there are so many around.

l have had a Laguna 1.6 for about 4 years, goes like a dream and has never broken down. A very comfortable ride with little maintenance.

If you want to make money do not buy a laguna. These cars are a disaster and will eat every penny you earn and then some.

My daughter had a Renault Laguna and apart from a problem on the main electrical multi plug which l soon fixed the car gave little trouble

l notice that so far u have had many telling u not to touch it & (at the time l write this) only one saying the car is good - yet, for some reason, u seem to only have listened to the person telling u it is good. Do u want honest opinions, or do u just want confirmation u r making a good buy?!

We had a Laguna. It was catastrophic. Gearbox went after 10,000 miles & Renault fussed about replacing it (brand new car)! The electrics were never right. l will never buy another Renault.

Of course, u can ignore all the advice u r getting & just go ahead & buy one anyway :-)

I'd agree, keep clear. The Laguna is a prime example of classic French electrics - ie. horrible.

As suggested the Passat, or Skoda Octavia, both in diesel form, are utterly reliable and easy to maintain and fix.

Friend of mine has run an Octavia in the taxi trade for the past few years, it is now done an astronomical mileage and is still bullet-proof and he wishes he'd got one years earlier . . .

Get a 2nd hand Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel, cheap to buy, reliable, and cheap to run. As well as spacious and great to drive. You can get a decent 3yr old one for about £4500.
