im having to pull off in second gear at the moment, l have had the linkage done not so long ago by a friend of a friend,the high gears are ok when im driving, but when l have to use low gears '' first or second'' its stiff going into it, so l do not wanna force the gears in to it, ive been told maybe it the clutch cable loose,the gears work good when the engine is off,so l know it not the gear box or the linkage,any ideas any one thanks Doug

It sounds like the clutch is dragging. You've been told right - the cable can stretch and cause this. Check the adjustment against your workshop manual.

Edit: also check the clutch pedal itself as these do sometimes bend and also the hollow roll-pin it pivots on can bend or break - either would have the same effect.

If you're unlucky enough to have a model with the hydraulic clutch then the clutch master cylinders have known design faults.

Common fault on these. you need new clutch hydraulics as your car does not have a cable
You get the modified master cylinder and slave cylinder as a kit from Renault ( about £150 ish )
And its a pain to fit as you have to remove quite a bit of the dash / steering inside the car
Edit sorry misread the year , your car could well have a cable clutch

first 2 seem to be on track highlighting clutch problems.
your only solution is to take it to a garage who are used to working on renaults for diagnosis.
sadly, it may not be financially worthwhile repairing.
