Great on the gadget side of things and very innovative in terms of technology. Good lines, but generally poor engines.

The quality can be very variable. Some fall apart within 5-6 years, some keep on running for 20 years or more. The electrical gadgets can be particularly unreliable. l had an old Renault 21 Estate, it was 18 years old by the time l got rid of it. Nothing except the engine was still working properly, but it had done 240000 miles so it had an excuse. Previously l had a Renault 18. Great engine, but it rusted through everywhere in no time at all.

Rubbish.
If you must buy French, go for a Peugeot.

l am from Germany and l drove a Renault Clio for 4 years. l bought the car when it was 11 years old. l never had any big problems with this car and l had a 1 hour commute every day. This car was very reliable and it was always really cheap to fix a problem. (it would probably be more expensive here in the USA to fix a problem). l would prefer an European car any time over a American car.

I've got a 1.6 16v Clio and l love it. Serviced last week for £260 (18,000 mile) and have not had any problems with it.
We've always had at least one Renault in our family and have always been happy. Also had a Peugeot and had no problems with that.
Take a test drive and see what you think.

u get a lot of car for ur money lots of electrical gadgets, but most r renowned for failing the gadgets that is, at some point relatively early in life. they then cost a lot to repair as they r mostly specialist renault parts & independant garages wo not touch them. that said we use renault as fleet vehicles for ambulances & all of them r still going strong engine wise with at least 250,000 miles on the clock. the diesel engines r pretty reliable & most of the renault cars score very well in the euro ncap crash test, a point worth concidering if u have a family. search for renault on the what car or which website, failing that search renault reviews under a search engine & make up ur own mind

l owned an 18 month old Laguna (1999) and ran it until it had done 97 000 miles with out any major problems. However the newer shape ones from around Y reg onwards are notoriously unreliable.
We had 3 laguna estates at my workplace and they were a nightmare as soon as they had gone over 60, 000 miles. Another company l know actually removed renault from their list of options for employees due to poor reliability.
